ROCKTOBER and NaNoWriMo'17

September means only two months until NaNoWriMo.

NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is a marathon event focusing on creative writing from November 1 to November 30. Traditionally, the goal is to write a 50,000-word novel in the timeframe. It's evolved to allow various goals (want to write 100,000-words instead? That's cool... or perhaps you'd like to try Pulp Speed One for a month? Awesome!)

As NaNoWriMo's site says,
"NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel."
So if you've thought about writing a novel (or for some of us, another one), why not set aside a month and go for it?

Yes, November seems far away, but it'll be here before you know it! The bonus of participating is having a bunch of other writers going through the process at the same time in a mad dash of festivity. It's usually pure heart and pure fun so it's a perfect fit for PulpRev!
One could say in this instance.... Pulp Revelry!

PulpRev.com will be hosting a PulpRev-specific event in October to lead up to the event. It's called ROCKTOBER and is an entire month dedicated to outlining, planning, and discussions about the process of preparing to write a novel manuscript. "Pantsers" (no planning prior to writing) might not care for this, so join at your discretion.

Here are some things you can do right now to get ready:
  • Make your account on the website - Simple, easy, just requires an e-mail.
  • Fill out your profile information - If you've ever done NaNoWriMo before, you can add those manuscripts so they count towards your lifetime word-count.
  • Explore the site - There are various tools and resources on the site. We will be making a thread for those in PulpRev to discuss things somewhere on the Forums, but encourage people to interact and talk with other writers wherever their project takes them (i.e. if you're writing a horror novel, go to the horror category and find something of interest to talk about). Most likely the group thread will be made in the Writing Groups & Clubs category.
  • See if your area has local events - For those in larger areas, there will be the option to go to live, real-person events where you can chat and write together. It's up to you if you want to attend these and spread the good word of PulpRev for interested minds.
  • Add This Account as a buddy - This is a new account specifically to act as a hub for PulpRev participants to find buddies and add each other. Buddies can send private messages to one another and keep an eye on each other's progress. Use this account to find and add each other. Alternatively, you can post a comment here with a link to your account.
  • Start to consider what you might be writing - Get excited for ROCKTOBER and prepare to make goals so that you can smash them when the time comes.
Superversives and like-minded writers can join as well!

Here is NaNoWriMo's official suggestions for how to get started as well. Usually, social media sites also have a great community involved with Word Sprints, Wars, etc. and talking with other writers about projects.

  1. I signed up a couple of days ago and just buddied up. Pulp speed ahead and dang the torpedoes!

    1. I'd be cautious using NaNoWrimo. They have pretty much totally converged.

  2. I note I have done it in the past without signing up. 50,000 words is the aim, after all.

(Not this year. I think I may set a goal to type up longhand writing at that speed. Much easier. 0:)
